Baltimore Orioles Postseason History

The Baltimore Orioles are one of baseball’s historic franchises, and with all of that history the team has had plenty of experience in the playoffs. From Hall of Famers to stars from different eras of the game, the Orioles have never been an easy out once they get to the playoffs, with enough talent to be elite competition at every turn.

In terms of playoff success for the Orioles, it is hard to do better than the team did in the late 1960s into the early 1970s. Baltimore won two championships during that time, with titles coming in 1966 and 1970. During that time, the Orioles went toe-to-toe with some of the best teams and players in the history of baseball, and often came out on top.

The 1966 World Series was a particularly impressive win for the O’s. They allowed just two runs during the series, which was a four game sweep for Baltimore. Both runs came in the first game of the series, with the Orioles rattling off 33 consecutive scoreless innings to close out the series in grand style. But just as impressive as the Orioles’ performance defensively was their ability to score against two of the best pitchers in the game.

To win that World Series, the Orioles had to go up against two Hall of Fame pitchers in Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. As many teams could tell you, achieving that was no easy feat, yet the O’s managed to score just enough to win each game of the series.

Their 1970 World Series victory was impressive as well, as they took out the legendary Cincinnati Reds, who were led by Johnny Bench and managed by Sparky Anderson. Their ability to take out a team led by one of the best managers of all-time and anchored by one of its best catchers was a testament to how strong the Orioles were at the time.

Baltimore has accumulated some rivals over the course of their postseason history, with the New York Yankees being at or near the top of the list after the two teams clashed repeatedly in the 1990s. One of the most memorable moments from their rivalry was the Derek Jeter home run where replays showed that a fan caught the ball before it cleared the fence, as Tony Tarasco looked poised to catch the ball for the Orioles.
