Baltimore Orioles Details
The Orioles are coming off a 2016 season in which they led Major League Baseball with 253 home runs, and there’s little reason to think they won’t continue to mash their way to a similar total in 2017. Returning to the middle of the batting order is Mark Trumbo, who was brought back to Oriole Park at Camden Yards on a three-year deal. Trumbo led the majors with a career-high 47 homers in 2016, which gave Baltimore the distinction of becoming the first team in MLB history to have three different players combine to win four straight home run titles. (Current Orioles first baseman Chris Davis led the majors in 2013 and ’15 while Nelson Cruz was MLB’s Home Run King in 2014 before leaving via free agency.) Trumbo and Davis were two of six Orioles to blast more than 20 home runs in 2016, and they were two of three along with superstar third baseman Manny Machado to reach 37 bombs. Machado, who didn’t turn 24 years old until a week before the 2016 All-Star Break, has established himself as one of baseball’s top all-around players, combining offensive prowess with the kind of defensive gems that are consistently featured on nightly highlight reels.
The strength of the Baltimore pitching staff is the bullpen, which is anchored by closer Zach Britton. The All-Star left-hander is coming off a season in which he not only led the American League with 47 saves, but his 0.54 ERA in 2016 was the lowest by any relief pitcher in MLB history with 50 or more innings.
