Any single descriptor to encapsulate Beyonce feels inadequate, as Queen Bey has transcended the world of music to become one of the most celebrated figures in the world. It all started in Houston, Texas, where her father helped her form a girl group that went on to become Destiny’s Child. Destiny’s Child signed to Columbia Records in 1997 and broke out with their 1999 sophomore album The Writing’s On The Wall, which featured such megahits as “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name.” By the time Destiny Fulfilled had finished dominating the charts in 2004, Destiny’s Child had become the best-selling all-female group of all time.
Already one of the most successful musicians in the world, few could have predicted the unprecedented heights Beyonce would reach when she began her solo career. Her 2003 debut album Dangerously in Love nabbed five Grammys, setting the tone for future record-breaking releases. I Am… Sasha Fierce, released in 2008, won a record six Grammys on the strength of Song of the Year “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” She broke new ground with her 2013 self-titled album, innovating with both the surprise nature of the album’s release and the fact that it was a “visual album,” packing in 17 videos to go with its 14 tracks. After 2016’s Lemonade, she became the first artist, male or female, ever to have her first six albums debut at No. 1. She has won 22 Grammys and the most-ever MTV Video Music Awards with 24.
Beyonce and Jay-Z On The Run II Tour
On March 12, Beyonce officially announced her joint return to the stadium circuit with rap legend husband, Jay-Z, for OTR II (On the Run II), following their highly successful 2014 OTR tour. OTR built upon the power couple’s Bonnie and Clyde personas with ski masks, sirens, and performances of their duets, “‘03 Bonnie & Clyde” and "Part II (On the Run)".
This year, Beyonce is stronger than ever before, headlining Coachella and continuing her artistic interpretations of Africa and Bonnie and Clyde with OTR II. Her Instagram tour announcement includes black and white visuals of her and Jay-Z atop a bullhorns-adorned motorcycle, which is said to be in direct reference to the 1973 Senegalese film, "Touki Bouki". The African classic follows a couple committing crimes in pursuit of wealth. Beyonce and Jay-Z’s most recent collaboration, “Top Off”, with DJ Khaled, Future and lyrics about escaping the police and living in luxury is almost guaranteed to be on the setlist. Tickets to experience OTR II go on sale March 19.
