Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament Details
Played since 1997, the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament has seen utter domination by the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas is the owner of 10 Big 12 titles and has played in 12 title games. The Jayhawks won the first three tourney titles in ’97, ’98, and ’99, and then won three straight again in 2006, 2007, and 2008. However, it wasn’t Bill Self’s Kansas team that took home the 2017 title, despite how dominant the team was all season.
For the 9th straight season, the Big 12 conference regular season champion was the Kansas Jayhawks. However, despite a 16-2 conference record, the Jayhawks faltered in the conference tournament and the Iowa State Cyclones emerged as the tournament champions, grabbing the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in the process. Iowa State coach Steve Prohm won his first conference title, while point guard Monte Morris was the tournament MVP. The Cyclones remain undefeated in conference championship games – 4-0 – and will look to make it 5-0 in 2018. There’s certainly a good chance that Kansas will take home the 2017-18 regular season title again, but there is no certainty that the Jayhawks will win the 2018 tournament with teams like Iowa State and Baylor in the mix.
The 2018 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament will take place at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri for the 9th straight year from March 7-March 11, 2018. Kansas will look for its 11th conference championship, while Iowa State will look to win its fourth title in the past five years.
