Founded in 1992, Blink-182 is an American pop punk and alternative rock band that was founded in Poway, CA by Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Scott Raynor. The trio met in high school and discovered a mutual love for punk shows and music. The band originally played under names including ‘Duck Tape’ and ‘Figure 8,’ but Tom eventually renamed the band ‘Blink’– it stuck. The string of numbers – “182” – was only added to avoid any legal dispute with an Irish techno group who also went by ‘Blink.’
By the mid-1990s, the members of Blink-182 embarked on their first national tour– purchasing their own tour bus to do so. Soon, major record labels were feuding in bidding wars over the band. The band’s third album, “Enema of the State,” was released in the summer of 1999 and the songs became regulars on MTV. Not only was Blink-182 producing great songs, the band’s music videos really had people talking. Notably, the band’s music video for their hit song, “What's My Age Again?” follows them running naked around Los Angeles’ streets.
However, the road to success wasn't always an easy one for Blink-182. The band had a four-year hiatus from 2005 to 2009 after Tom DeLonge quit. A 2008 plane crash left drummer Travis Barker with serious burns and PTSD. The crash killed the band’s producer, Jerry Finn. This serious event inspired the members to reconvene, and Blink-182 has since been active, to the relief of their many fans around the globe.
The band has released multiple studio albums, a live album, video albums, and a variety of singles, music videos, and more. Blink-182 has taken home a variety of awards as well, including an MTV Video Music Award for Best Group, Kerrang! Icon Award, and others.
For more than two decades, the members of Blink-182 have been churning out hits for their devoted fans. Some of the band’s most popular songs include:
- I Miss You
- Feeling This
- After Midnight
- All the Small Things
- What’s My Age Again?
- I’m Lost Without You
- She’s Out of Her Mind
The unique thing about Blink-182’s music is how the members have combined pop music melodies with fast-paced punk rock.
