Boston Red Sox Details
Boston Red Sox
One of the most historic franchises in baseball, the Boston Red Sox were a founding member of the American League. The franchise played from 1901 to 1907 as the Boston Americans and changed their name to Red Sox the following year. The franchise was extremely successful early on: they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 and won five total championships by 1918.
After their 1918 title, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth — who they had used as a pitcher — to the New York Yankees. In the aftermath of the deal, the Yankees became the most successful and prominent team in baseball. The Red Sox, however, fared much worse. Their 1918 World Series win was the start of an 86 year championship drought known as the “Curse of the Bambino.”
Luckily for Red Sox fans, the story of the Curse has a happy ending. In 2004, the Red Sox faced the Yankees in the ALCS. The Sox lost the first three games of the series and were nearly swept. But they tied Game 4 in the 9th inning, and David Ortiz won the game with a home run in extra innings. Ortiz delivered another clutch performance in Game 5, and Curt Schilling pitched through an injury to secure the victory in Game 6. The Sox dominated Game 7, and they became the first MLB team to win a series after losing the first three games. Boston advanced to the World Series and defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in four games. With the Curse broken, the Red Sox have become one of the most successful teams of the 21st century: they followed their World Series win in 2004 with championships in 2007 and 2013.
The Red Sox play at Fenway Park. Fenway opened in 1912 and is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball.
In 2017, the Red Sox won the AL East division but lost to Houston Astros, who went on to win the World Series, in the divisional round. The Sox received all-star quality pitching from starter Chris Sale, and Craig Kimbrel was named the American League Reliever of the Year. The 2018 Red Sox will try to win their consecutive division title.
