Much more than the average festival, Burning Man is a completely unique experience that draws tens of thousands to the Nevada desert every year. The event, started by a group of Bay Area friends in 1986, is a completely self-sustaining community known as Black Rock City. It’s founded on 10 core principles, among them: radical inclusion, gifting (through art or self-expression), participation, and leaving no trace. These principles manifest in large-scale art installations, elaborate costumes and campsites, live music and performance. The gathering culminates in a symbolic ritual burning of a large wooden effigy (hence the name Burning Man), after which attendees leave the desert in better shape than they found it, as if they’d never been there at all. It takes place annually in the week leading up to Labor Day.
