Butler Bulldogs Basketball Details

The state of Indiana loves its basketball. But after many years of the college hoops scene being dominated by a team from Bloomington, Butler has spent the 20th century establishing itself as the Hoosier State’s latest national power.

Under head coach Brad Stevens, the Bulldogs reached the national title game in both 2010 and 2011, losing both times. They joined the prestigious Big East Conference in 2013, and reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen again in 2017.

Former Butler coaches Tony Hinkle and Harlan Page are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, while Stevens went on to coach the NBA’s Boston Celtics.

The Bulldogs plays home games in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, which was the largest basketball arena in the United States when it was built in 1928. You probably remember Hinkle from the 1986 film Hoosiers, which told the story of tiny Hickory High winning the state title. But you might not know that Milan High – on which Hickory was based – won its 1954 Indiana state championship at Hinkle. The baskets are 10 feet high, just like Norman Dale said.

One more Hoosiers tidbit: Milan star Bobby Plump, who was named as Indiana’s “Mr. Basketball” in 1954, attended Butler and scored 1,439 points in his collegiate career.

The on-campus arena seats approximately 9,100 fans, and still uses the original basketball floor. It is located approximately five miles from downtown Indianapolis.

Indiana practically lives and breathes basketball during the winter. If you’re a hoops fan in Indy, a Butler game at Hinkle is a can’t-miss experience. Get your tickets now!
