The Flames had many of their best seasons during the 1980s. Unfortunately for fans in Calgary, Alberta’s other team, the Edmonton Oilers, dominated the league for much of the decade. The playoffs were set up so that Calgary and Edmonton would almost certainly face each other in the first two rounds.
The Flames were major underdogs against the Oilers in the second round of the 1986 playoffs. The Oilers were looking for their third straight Stanley Cup and were the league’s best team during the regular season. The Flames stretched the series to a Game 7. Five minutes into the third period of a tied game, Oilers defenseman Steve Smith scored an infamous own-goal that ended up winning the series for Calgary. The Flames eventually advanced to their first Stanley Cup Final, but they were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens.
Fortunately, the Flames didn’t have to wait too long for a rematch. Both Calgary and Montreal reached the Stanley Cup Final again in 1989. This time, the Flames—who had stacked their roster with players like Joe Nieuwendyk, Theoren Fleury, Doug Gilmour, and Mike Vernon--came out on top and won their first Stanley Cup.
Long-time Flames Captain Jarome Iginla led the team to the Stanley Cup Final again in 2004. The Flames faced the Tampa Bay Lightning. Iginla famously fought Tampa’s Vincent Lecvalier, and the Flames took a 3-2 lead in the series but lost in Game 6 after a heartbreaking Lightning goal in double overtime. The Flames could not recover and lost Game 7 to Tampa Bay.
