Questions About Calgary Flames
The Flames organization started out in Atlanta. The short-lived Atlanta Flames played from 1972 to 1979 before the team relocated to Calgary for the 1980-81 season. The Flames swapped out their flaming A logo for a flaming C, but the old Atlanta Flames logo has remained in use as the “A” on the jerseys of Calgary’s alternate captains.
Shortly after they arrived in Calgary, the Flames developed a contentious rivalry with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers teams of the 1980s were some of the most talented the NHL has ever seen, but the Flames always managed to be one of their toughest opponents, particularly in the playoffs. In the 1986 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Flames defeated the Oilers in the Division Finals when, with Game 7 tied at 2, Oilers’ defenseman Steve Smith accidentally played the puck off his own goalie and into Edmonton’s net. Smith’s own-goal won the series for Calgary, and the Flames ultimately advanced to their first Stanley Cup Final. It took the Flames until 1989 to win their first Stanley Cup, and they did so with a stacked roster that included Theoren Fleury, Gary Roberts, Joe Mullen Doug Gilmour, Lanny McDonald, Al MacInnis, and Joe Nieuwendyk. The Flames defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games.
After many disappointing seasons in which the Flames failed to qualify for the playoffs, the team made a surprising run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. Led by the goal scoring of Captain Jarome Iginla and stellar goaltending from Miikka Kiprusoff, the Flames defeated some of the Western Conference’s toughest teams but lost the Stanley Cup to the Lightning after seven games. Iginla and Kiprusoff helped the Flames make the playoffs in four consecutive seasons after their run to the Final.
After Kiprusoff’s retirement and Iginla’s departure, the Flames developed exciting players like Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.
