California Golden Bears Football Details

Some of the country’s most famous college football sites include Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Rose Bowl and Notre Dame Stadium. But one of the game’s hidden gems is California Memorial Stadium, nestled in the campus foothills in Berkeley.

Cal’s Golden Bears began playing football in 1882, and first battled Bay Area rival Stanford in 1892. The “Big Game” between Cal and Stanford has been played more than 100 times, and stands as the oldest college football rivalry in the West.

The most famous play in the rivalry – and possibly the most incredible in college football history – occurred at Berkeley in 1982, when Kevin Moen received the last of a series of laterals and ran over a Stanford trombone player on his way into the end zone to clinch a dramatic Cal victory.

The Golden Bears claim five national championships in their history, including four in a row from 1920-23. Those squads were coached by College Football Hall of Famer Andy Smith and known as the “Wonder Teams.”

Cal has had more than two dozen consensus All-America selections, including familiar names such as Tony Gonzalez, DeSean Jackson and Ron Rivera. Not featured on that list: Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff, along with running back Marshawn Lynch.

Due to the Memorial Stadium’s dense campus setting, you won’t really find big lots for tailgating at Bears’ games. Many fans enjoy pregame festivities in downtown Berkeley, with some arriving conveniently via BART instead of driving.
