California Golden Bears Football Details

The University of California football team has won five national championships (1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1937) and 14 conference titles. It has, however, been a long time since fans inside California Memorial Stadium have seen their team as a true contender. That is why the Golden Bears decided to part ways with Sonny Dykes in the offseason. Taking Dykes’ place is new head coach Justin Wilcox, who was Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator last season. The Badgers allowed only 15.5 points per game last season (4th in the country), and Cal is definitely hoping that Wilcox can turn things around on that side of the field moving forward. This team previously ran an “Air Raid” offense, but one would think the Golden Bears were sick of losing high-scoring games.

Saying that Cal’s offense is going to look different over the next few years would be an understatement. This Golden Bears offense was designed to spread the defense out and score a ridiculous amount of points, no matter what the consequences of that were for their exhausted defense. Cal will now have a more traditional approach, but that shouldn’t stop running back Tre Watson from eating up yards. Last season, Watson rushed for 709 yards and four touchdowns, and also caught 21 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. He is the total package out of the backfield, and he is here to give opposing defenses nightmares. As for the Cal defense, this unit should be much more disciplined under Wilcox. Significant improvements will be made on that side of the ball.
