Carolina Panthers Details

While sometimes overlooked by the national media due to playing in a relatively small market, the Carolina Panthers have regularly been a contender since joining the NFL in the 1995 season. They set an expansion team record with seven wins in that very first year and, incredibly, went 12-4 and reached the NFC Championship Game in their second season in existence. It would be until 2003 when they made another playoff run, but what a run it was: Unheralded quarterback Jake Delhomme led the team to Super Bowl XXXVIII, where they lost 32-29 to Tom Brady’s Patriots in one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever played.

These days, the Panthers draw fans at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium by fielding a roster full of some of the most talented players in the NFL. That starts with quarterback Cam Newton, who the team selected first overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. Carolina only needed to wait until 2013 for Newton to get them back to their first playoffs since 2008, but it was his 2015 campaign that set the world on fire: Newton won the league’s MVP award as the Panthers went 15-1 and made their second Super Bowl appearance in team history. Newton remains the centerpiece of the team today, and he is surrounded by reinforcements that will help pick the team up from a rocky 2016. Pro Bowl tackle Matt Kalil arrived via free agency to give him some much needed protection, and franchise legend defensive end Julius Peppers is back in Charlotte at the age of 38 to bolster the Panthers defense.
