One of the premiere tournaments of the college basketball calendar, the CBS Sports Classic pulls four distinct teams from around the country to go head-to-head. The event began in 2014 and is played between the same four teams every year: the UCLA Bruins, Ohio State Buckeyes, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Kentucky Wildcats. The tournament is played in December each year and in 2016 was renewed for three more years, continuing through the 2019-2020 season. The past three tournaments were held in top arenas in Chicago, New York, and Las Vegas. This year, the four teams will travel down to New Orleans to play at the Smoothie King Center, where Ohio State will play North Carolina and UCLA will be matched up against Kentucky. Currently, Kentucky and North Carolina are top the all-time leaderboard with two wins and one loss each, while UCLA and Ohio State both hold one win and two losses in the tournament.
These four teams together total 25 NCAA Tournament championships, making up nearly a third of all title winners in history. Pairing up some of the best programs in college basketball means fans can experience top-notch competition among some of the top players in today’s game. Past CBS Sports Classic participants include Kentucky’s Karl-Anthony Towns, the 2015 first overall pick in the NBA Draft, UNC point guard Marcus Paige, an NCAA champion and Brooklyn Nets draft pick in 2016. Though it may be one of the younger tournaments of the season, the CBS Sports Classic is quickly gaining a reputation as showcasing some of the best non-conference play over the course of the season.
