Chance the Rapper Details
With a joyous, heartfelt catalogue of music and a level of independent success that has turned the music industry on its head, Chance the Rapper has quickly become one of the most widely beloved figures in all of American music. Born Chancelor Bennett on April 16th, 1993 in Chicago, Chance dropped his first mixtape 10 Day in 2012 after serving a 10-day suspension at Jones College Prep High School earlier that school year. He made his first real splash a year later, though, with the release of Acid Rap. Named SPIN Magazine’s No. 2 album of 2013, Acid Rap brought together a series of musical styles into one rap mixtape, complete with features from Chicago legends like Twista and out-of-town up-and-comers like Action Bronson. It would be three years before Chance released his next mixtape, a period in which he lectured at Harvard, performed on Saturday Night Live and released the album Surf as a member of the band The Social Experiment.
Acid Rap’s follow-up finally arrived in May 2016 in the form of Coloring Book, a 14-track project with features from superstars such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber. In September 2016, he embarked on the Magnificent Coloring World Tour, performing 34 shows in North America and Europe. He made headlines in March 2017 when he announced a personal donation of $1 million to Chicago Public Schools, his biggest gesture yet in a career full of activism. He reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts for the first time in April 2017 thanks to his verse on D.J. Khaled’s single “I’m the One.”
