Cher Details

Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in El Centro, CA, Cher is an extremely well-known American singer and actress. There is perhaps no other singer with a more iconic voice than Cher herself. While she’s found great success over the years, Cher’s childhood wasn’t always pleasant. Her parents divorced when she was just a baby and her father was rarely home. Cher moved around a lot as a child and often didn’t have very much money. Even so, Cher persisted and didn’t let her struggles impact the hopes and dreams she had.

From the time she was in elementary school, Cher loved musicals and film stars. She looked up to Audrey Hepburn and decided she, too, would become famous one day. At the age of 16, Cher dropped out of high school and moved to LA where she pursued a career in acting. In November of 1962, Cher met performer Sonny Bono. But it wasn’t all glam from there – in fact, Cher initially accepted a job to be Sonny’s housekeeper. Of course, they soon became more than good friends and married in 1964.

That same year, Cher signed with Liberty Records' Imperial with Sonny as her producer. Her cover of Bob Dylan's “All I Really Want to Do” peaked at No. 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 the following year. Cher’s debut album of the same name reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200. A star had certainly been born.

Sonny and Cher recorded and released “I Got You Babe” which skyrocketed to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The duo attracted attention worldwide and young women everywhere were emulating Cher’s signature style. Soon referred to as the world’s “it couple,” Sonny and Cher created ten Billboard Top 40 singles between 1965 and 1972, including five top-ten singles.

Of course, the duo had their ups and downs throughout the years, at times struggling to maintain their identities. The couple made a comeback in 1971 with their weekly series, “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.” Four years later, Sonny and Cher were divorced but that didn’t stop Cher from continuing to build on her success.

By the year 1989, Cher had nearly 20 studio albums to her name and had won an array of prestigious awards. From the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1988 to the 1999 World Music Legend Award for Outstanding Contribution To The Music Industry, Cher had made her long-lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
