Chicago Cubs Postseason History
The history of the Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball’s postseason is a story of overcoming adversity, as the team had to overcome plenty of heartbreak to reach the pinnacle of the sport. But overcoming adversity can be so much sweeter than simply reaching the top of the mountain, something that Cubs fans can attest to after one of the most euphoria-inducing championship seasons in the history of sports.
Of course, to properly discuss the story of the Cubs in the playoffs, one has to recall the infamous Curse of the Billy Goat. In 1945, the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago was kicked out of a Cubs game along with the pet goat he brought to Wrigley Field with him. The man stated that the team wouldn’t continue to win, starting a “curse” that lasted for decades.
During this curse, there were plenty of memorable moments where the Cubs fell just short of reaching their ultimate goal. But perhaps no moment was as memorable as Game Six of the 2003 National League Championship Series, where a fan’s involvement changed the trajectory of the season. That fan was Steve Bartman, who tried to catch a foul ball down the third base line, unknowingly interfering with Moises Alou in the process. Alou wasn’t able to catch the ball, and the Florida Marlins, now known as the Miami Marlins, were able to come back and steal the pennant from the Cubs in a series that convinced so many that the curse was real.
But in 2016, the Cubs erased any notion of a curse by defeating the Cleveland Indians in six games to win their first World Series since 1908. The series was incredible, with three games being decided by one run, including the deciding seventh game which went to extra innings. That seventh game saw the tenth inning delayed by pouring rain in Cleveland, which served as a symbolic purging of the curse in the eyes of many Cubs fans.
Of course, during the series, it looked like the curse was set to continue when the Indians jumped out to a 3-1 lead following a 7-2 win in Game Four of the series. But Chicago was able to battle back, and when Aroldis Chapman secured the final outs of the Cubs’ long-awaited championship, the scenes in front of Wrigley Field were unforgettable as over a century of heartbreak culminated in sheer joy.
