Chicago Cubs Details

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs were a founding member of the National League and have played in Chicago since 1876. Over that period, the team has won three World Series titles.

In 1998, Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa and Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire were the biggest story in baseball. Both players seemed destined to break Roger Maris’s record of 61 home runs in a single season. Sosa and McGwire both broke the record by the end of the season. Sosa finished second to McGwire with 66 home runs.

Until 2016, the Cubs were known for having the longest championship drought in major pro sports. 108 years passed between the Cubs’ second World Series win in 1908 and their third in 2016.

Though Cubs fans had gotten used to disappointment over the years, there were plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the 2016 team. After an exciting 2015 season in which the Cubs made the playoffs in a Wild Card spot and made it to the NLCS, the Cubs returned even stronger in 2016. They won 100 games in the regular season for the first time since the Great Depression and won the NL Central division. They reached the World Series for the first time since 1945. After falling behind the Cleveland Indians three games to one, the Cubs won the final three games — including a dramatic 8-7 Game 7 win in extra innings—and won their first World Series title in more than a century.

2017 was another successful year for the Cubs. Though they were not able to repeat as World Series champs, the Cubs did win their division for a second consecutive year and advanced to the NLCS for a third consecutive year. In 2018, the Cubs will look to prolong what could be the most successful period in their long history: the team has a chance to qualify for four consecutive postseasons for the first time.

The Cubs’ home ballpark is Wrigley Field on Chicago’s north side (Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the American League’s White Sox, is on the south side). The Cubs have played at Wrigley since 1916, and the park is the oldest in the National League.
