Chicago White Sox Details

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox, originally called the White Stockings, were a founding member of the American League in 1901. The White Sox won the World Series in 1917 with a team that included “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. In 1919, the White Sox played in a best-of-nine World Series that they lost to the Cincinnati Reds. The 1919 Series is best known for the infamous Black Sox scandal: members of the White Sox accepted a $5000 bribe to intentionally lose the Series. Eight members of the White Sox, including Jackson (though many still argue he was innocent), were banned from baseball forever.

After the scandal, the White Sox faced a long championship drought. They reached the Series just once (in 1959) before they finally won in 2005. The White Sox beat the Houston Astros in four games to capture their first title in almost 90 years. The 2005 Red Sox were known for their dominant pitching, led by all-star Mark Buehrle, but right fielder Jermaine Dye was named MVP of the World Series. Dye had a .438 batting average in the Series, and he hit the tie-breaking home run to win Game 4.

The White Sox play at Guaranteed Rate Field, on Chicago’s south side (Wrigley Field, home to the Cubs, is located on the north side). The park opened in 1991.

The White Sox hired Rick Renteria to take over as manager for the 2017 season. Renteria did not fare well in his first season with the Sox: Chicago placed fourth in the American League Central and finished 18 games back of a Wild Card spot (in fact, the White Sox have never made the playoffs as a Wild Card team). Jose Abreu was a bright spot for the Sox: he hit 33 home runs and had a batting average above .300. Nevertheless, the team did a lot of work in preparation for the future, and have some of the brightest prospects in the game right now. Chicago fans will be eager to see if 2018 is the year those pieces come into place around core players Abreu and Avisail Garcia.
