Cincinnati Reds Details

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds franchise began in 1892. The team originally played as the Cincinnati Red Stockings in the American Association and then shortened the name to “Reds” after joining the National League in 1890.

The Reds have won five World Series titles. The Reds teams of the 1970s—known today as “The Big Red Machine”—were some of the best baseball teams of all time. The franchise’s most recent Series victory came in 1990, when they defeated the Oakland Athletics. The last championship Reds’ team relied on their strong bullpen. Relievers Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble, and Randy Myers were known as the Nasty Boys. Oakland did not score a single run on the Nasty Boys trio, and the Reds swept the series.

Later in the 90s, the Reds added more star power, including future hall of famer Ken Griffey Jr, but the team only qualified for the playoffs once between 1990 and 2010. But the Reds have had some success in the current decade. In 2010, the Reds rode first baseman Joey Votto’s National League MVP season to their first NL Central Division title and playoff appearance since 1995. They made the playoffs again in 2012 and 2013

Cincinnati is coming off a poor season in which they finished last in the NL Central. But there were some bright spots for Reds fans: 34 year-old Joey Votto continued his excellent play and finished the year with 36 home runs (good for sixth in the league), Catcher Tucker Barnhart capped off a breakout year with a Gold Glove award, and third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a career-best 26 homers. The Reds will be without all-star outfielder Zack Cozart in 2018, however—Cozart signed as a free agent with the Angels during the offseason.

The Reds play at Great American Ball Park, which opened in 2003. The park is located in Downtown Cincinnati, near the Ohio River.
