Clemson Tigers Football Details
2016 was a magical year for the Clemson University football team, as the Tigers won their first national championship since 1981 with a 35-31 triumph over Alabama, one of the most thrilling sports games, period, in recent memory. It was a fitting conclusion to a season that will never be forgotten, a run that included tight wins over elite Louisville and Florida State teams, and a 31-0 statement victory over Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. Now head coach Dabo Swinney and the boys are back on the field for the 2017 campaign, and there’s plenty of reason to believe they’ll once again be among the nation’s elite teams. Much of that is on the defensive side of the ball, where Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence stand out as All-American-caliber players on a defensive line that brought back everyone from last year’s title-winning team.
First established over 120 years ago in 1896, the Clemson University football program was a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. Since then, the Tigers have won 16 ACC titles, more than any other member of the conference. Their two most recent conference titles came back to back in 2015 and 2016, both years in which the team also appeared in the National Championship Game. Clemson plays its home games at the ACC’s largest stadium, Memorial Stadium, known much more commonly as Death Valley. One of college football’s most famous gameday traditions features Clemson players rubbing Howard’s Rock for good luck before running past thousands of fans down “The Hill” onto the field.
