Cleveland Indians Details

The Indians franchise got its start in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as a minor league team called the Grand Rapids Rustlers. Eventually, the franchise moved to Cleveland and became a member of the American League when it formed in 1901. They adopted the Indians nickname in 1915.

Among other things, the Indians are known for a 22-game wining streak the team had from August 24 through September 15, 2017, which set a Major League Baseball record. Cleveland would go on to finish the season with 102 wins, marking the third time in history that the club won more than 100 games.

The Indians’ home ballpark is Progressive Field, in downtown Cleveland. The park opened in 1994, and the Indians won the AL pennant the very next season, though they lost to the Braves in the World Series. Fans voted in a 2008 Sports Illustrated poll to name Progressive Field the best park in the major leagues.

Over the years, a handful of Hall of Famers have spent time on the Indians. This group of players includes Roberto Alomar, Larry Doby, Bert Blyleven, Lou Boudreau, and Steve Carlton, among others.

Cinema fans may be familiar with the Indians from the 1989 movie Major League, which was centered around a fictionalized version of the team facing a potential relocation outside of Cleveland. The movie introduced memorable characters including "Willie Mays Hayes" (played by Wesley Snipes) and a pitcher nicknamed "Wild Thing" (played by Charlie Sheen).

The Indians are locked in a battle for Ohio baseball fandom

According to an analysis of SeatGeek data published prior to the 2019 season, there is a fierce battle for baseball fandom in Ohio, where the Indians are the top team in 20 counties (out of 21 total, including one in PA). The in-state rival Reds are the team with the most shopped-for tickets in 47 Ohio counties, and 194 counties in total.

Ohio is an interesting case compared to other states, with fandom split across five unique teams: the Pirates in the east on the Pennsylvania border, the Indians surrounding Cleveland, the Tigers on the Michigan border, the Cubs in the west, and the Reds across the central and southern parts of the state. Only Pennsylvania is split among more teams (seven total).

Additional findings in our data include:

  • The Braves, with strong support across the southeastern U.S., are the most popular team in 515 counties -- most in the MLB
  • The Mariners, who control Alaska and much of the Pacific Northwest, are the team that covers the greatest land area
  • The Braves are also in control of the most “out of state counties” with 360, followed by the Royals (223) and Cardinals (205)
  • Baseball allegiance in Pennsylvania is split among seven teams, more than any other state
