Cleveland Indians Details
The Indians franchise got its start in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as a minor league team called the Grand Rapids Rustlers. Eventually, the franchise moved to Cleveland and became a member of the American League when it formed in 1901. They adopted the Indians nickname in 1915.
The Indians have won two World Series titles, with the most recent championship coming in 1948. As of the start of the 2018 season, the 69 seasons since the team won the World Series is the longest active championship drought in Major League Baseball.
Fans in Cleveland have plenty to be excited about, however. In 2016, the Indians reached the World Series for the first time since 1997 and played against the Chicago Cubs. It was a series between the teams with the two longest championship droughts in baseball. The Indians took a 3-1 series lead over Chicago, but the Cubs stormed back to tie the series, and the Indians ultimately fell in extra innings of a dramatic Game 7.
Cleveland bounced back from their disappointing World Series loss with another strong season. Pitcher Corey Kluber won his second Cy Young award, and the Indians set a record in the 2017 season when they won 21 consecutive games. They ultimately extended their record-breaking streak to 22 games. The streak helped the Indians win the American League Central Division by 17 games over the Minnesota Twins. In the playoffs, the Indians faced the upstart New York Yankees in the ALDS. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series but lost the next three games, as the wild card Yankees completed the upset. Despite another disappointing finish, the Indians should contend again for a playoff spot in 2018.
The Indians’ home ballpark is Progressive Field, in downtown Cleveland. The park opened in 1994. Fans voted in a 2008 Sports Illustrated poll to name Progressive Field the best park in the major leagues.
