Colorado Rapids Details
Despite some exciting moments, last season didn't end the way fans wanted for the Colorado Rapids, but one down season is no cause for despair. Loyal supporters from Centennial 38 know that with the Rapids, it's often darkest before the dawn.
The club had a forgettable year in the inaugural MLS season of 1996. Despite fielding an abundance of talent, the club finished last in the Western Conference with the worst record in the league. Little did fans or pundits know how fast the franchise would turn things around.
In 1997 the Rapids finished fourth in the West and were handed a seemingly insurmountable task when matched against the #1 seeded Kansas City Wizards. But the Burgundy Wave whipped the Wiz with a 6-2 aggregate score. Chris Henderson, who would become a legend with the franchise, scored the opening goal to lead Colorado 3-1 over Dallas in the next home-and-home playoff. Powerful D.C. United would score first in the ensuing MLS Cup Final, played in a driving rain for over 50,000 D.C. faithful at RFK Stadium. David Patino scored late to halve a 2-0 deficit, but the Rapids could not pull off the upset and finished runner-up.
The next 10 seasons brought modest results, but by the late 2000s, the pieces were being assembled for another run at the grail - and this time the Rapids didn't fall short.
With new additions such as Danny Earls and Claudio Lopez joining a dangerous side that already harbored strikers like Quincy Amarikwa, the Rapids qualified for the 2010 MLS Cup playoffs and roared to a conference title. In the final showdown with FC Dallas, the clubs fought to a 1-1 standstill before an unfortunate own goal by Dallas defender George John gave Colorado its first and only league championship.
New skipper Anthony Hudson has been tasked with returning the Rapids to prominence in 2018. Dominique Badji, who led the squad with nine goals in '17, is still a developing player who could find the net much more often in years to come.
But Hudson and company have been focusing on the back line, hoping to build around Howard's veteran presence and improve on the side's -20 goal differential from last season. Former Ipswich Town center back Tommy Smith is a steady footballer who has played for Hudson in the past, but all eyes will be on Edgar Castillo, a former USMNT workhorse who knows how to communicate with the club's star keeper and could help lift the Rapids out of choppy waters.
