Colorado Rockies Details

The Rockies joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1993. The team has made a number of playoff appearances over the course of its short history.

Colorado’s first trip to the World Series started in exciting fashion, with a Wild Card berth that required them to win 14 of the last 15 games of the 2007 season. The Rockies kept winning in the playoffs, too. They beat the Padres in a one-game playoff, swept the Phillies in the NLDS, and then swept the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS. But Colorado’s amazing run came to an end in the World Series: they lost in four games to the Boston Red Sox.

Outfielder Larry Walker was the team's first-ever National League MVP, winning the award for the 1997 season. Walker, one of the greatest players in team history, hit .366 that season, with 49 home runs and 130 RBI. He also won a Gold Glove that year, one of seven over the course of his career. Walker was also a five-time All-Star.

Rockies fans might associate Walker with his longtime teammate Todd Helton, who played his entire 17-year career with the Rockies from 1997 to 2013. Helton is a career .316 hitter who hit 369 home runs for the Rockies and made five All-Star teams.

The Rockies’ home ballpark is Coors Field, located in Denver’s lower downtown area. Because baseballs travel farther in the dry Denver air, Coors Field has a reputation for being one of the most hitter friendly parks in baseball. The Rockies store their baseballs in a gigantic humidor in order to counteract the effects of Denver’s elevation. The center field bleachers at Coors Field are known as the Rockpile. Die-hard Rockies fans have sat in the Rockpile since the franchise’s first season when they played at Mile High Stadium.

Based on an analysis of SeatGeek data published prior to the 2019 MLB season, Rockies "fandom" covers 162 counties in total, 98 of them outside of Colorado. Those counties make up nearly 400,000 square miles across Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Montana.

Only the Mariners -- who control Alaska and much of the Pacific Northwest -- top the Rockies when it comes to the team that covers the greatest land area. The Rangers, with large coverage of the country’s second-largest state of Texas, are third at roughly 340,000 square miles.
