Colorado Rockies Details
Playing in the home-run happy confines of Coors Field makes slugging a signature of any Rockies team, but this current roster would be blasting balls into the bleachers just about anywhere. The power starts with third baseman Nolan Arenado, who led the National League with 41 home runs in 2016 and all of the MLB with 133 RBIs. Only 25 years old to start the 2017 season, he’s one of the best young players in all of baseball. 24-year-old shortstop Trevor Story hit 27 home runs in only 97 games in his rookie season, flashing potential—and right-now ability—paralleled by few players. Second baseman D.J. LeMahieu led the NL with a .348 batting average in 2016, and outfielders Charlie Blackmon and and Carlos Gonzalez are veterans with some pop in their bats. As for the rotation? No. 1 starter Jon Gray accomplished the rarest of feats in 2016: Posting better pitching statistics in Coors Field than on the road. Clearly he’s meant to be on the Rockies.
Introduced alongside the Marlins as an expansion team in 1993, the Rockies are one of the youngest franchises in the Major Leagues. They’ve been home to several iconic players, including Andrés Galarraga, Todd Helton and Larry Walker, who won the NL MVP in Colorado in 1997. The team has made three playoff appearances in its history, including a 2007 postseason run in which they swept both the NLDS and NLCS to win the NL and advance to the World Series. Located in downtown Denver, Coors Field has hosted the Rockies since first opening in 1995.
