After nine long years, Blue Jackets fans finally got to see their team in the playoffs for the first time in 2009. Unfortunately, that first trip to the postseason did not go well for Columbus: the Detroit Red Wings swept the series, holding the Blue Jackets to just two goals in the first three games.

The Blue Jackets finished outside of the playoffs in the next four seasons. After some franchise-altering moves, including trading Rick Nash to the New York Rangers and acquiring goalie Sergei Bobrovsky from the Philadelphia Flyers, the Blue Jackets returned to the playoffs in 2013. The Jackets drew a tough matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Columbus won their franchise’s first playoff game in Game 4, but the Penguins clinched the series in Game 5.

CBJ made the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time in 2017 and 2018. Their bad luck in the first round continued, however, as the teams they matched up with (Pittsburgh in 2017 and Washington in 2018) went on to win the Stanley Cup. In their 2018 series with the Washington Capitals, it looked like the Blue Jackets could have pulled off an upset: they won the first two games of the series—on the road—in overtime. But Washington pulled off a double overtime win in Game 3, and the Blue Jackets did not win another game in the series.

NHL Playoff Format

The NHL is split into an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference. Both conferences are made up of two divisions. The Blue Jackets play in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams from each division automatically qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Both conferences also send two wild card teams to the playoffs. A total of 16 teams—8 from both conferences—make the playoffs.

There are four rounds in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The winner of each round is decided by a best-of-seven series. The first two rounds of the playoffs pit division rivals against each other and give wild card teams a chance to pull off an upset.

Round 3 is the Conference Final. The winners of the Eastern Conference Final receive the Prince of Wales Trophy, and the winners of the Western Conference Final are awarded the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.

The winners of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference Finals face each other in the Stanley Cup Final.
