Connecticut Huskies Basketball Details

UConn’s men’s basketball program became a varsity sport in 1903, and the school was a founding member of the Big East Conference in 1979. Back then, four national titles seemed like an impossible dream.

The Huskies finished below .500 in five of their first 10 seasons in the Big East, and didn’t earn a single NCAA Tournament berth. They broke through in 1989-90, earning the top seed in the East Region, and losing to Duke on a buzzer beater in overtime. Coach Jim Calhoun and the Huskies were heartbroken, but they had arrived.

Over the next 25 years, UConn was an elite program. They won national championships in 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014, and reached the Sweet Sixteen 13 times. Calhoun led the program to three of those four titles while winning 629 games in Storrs, and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Consensus first-team All-American Huskies include Donyell Marshall (1994), Ray Allen (1996), Richard Hamilton (1999), Emeka Okafor (2004), Kemba Walker (2011) and Shabazz Napier (2014).

UConn home games split time between on-campus Gampel Pavilion (capacity of more than 10,000) and the XL Center, formerly known as the Hartford Civic Center (more than 15,000). The XL Center is located approximately 25 miles from the Storrs campus.

The Huskies currently play in the American Athletic Conference, a geographically diverse institution featuring schools as distant as Houston and Tampa. The AAC teams in closest proximity to UConn are Temple and Cincinnati.
