The Stars began their first season in Dallas in 1993. The team moved to Dallas in spite of some fairly recent success at their former home in Minnesota, where the team was known as the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1991, and they won two games against Mario Lemieux and the star-studded Pittsburgh Penguins before losing the series in Game 6.
It didn’t take long for the Stars to find success in Texas—they made the playoffs in their first two seasons and were one of the dominant Western Conference teams of the late 1990s. In the 1998-99 season, the Stars won the President’s Trophy as the NHL’s best regular-season team and made their first trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
The 1999 Stars were a deep team: future hall of famers Mike Modano, Brett Hull, and Joe Nieuwendyk contributed much of the offense, and they had another future hall of famer—Ed Belfour—in net. After a dramatic seven-game victory over the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final, the Stars played the Buffalo Sabres in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final.
After the Stars took 3-2 lead in the series, the potentially championship-clinching Game 6 went into overtime tied at 1. In the third overtime, Brett Hull scored a controversial goal to clinch the Stanley Cup for the Stars. Replays showed the Hull’s skate was in the crease, which could have negated the goal, but it was ruled that Hull had continuous possession of the puck, and the goal—and the championship—was allowed to stand. Any Stars fan will tell you: it was a good goal.
