Drake Details

Between his stellar rapping ability, his prescient ear for trends and a track record of crossover hits, it’s no wonder that Drake, as one of the most successful musicians in the world, would have his fair share of imitators. So when he boasted “Every song sounds like Drake featuring Drake,” in 2013, he may have been giving his competition too much credit—who else can do everything that he does? Born as Aubrey Graham in 1986 in Toronto, a city that holds a strong presence in his music, Drake’s first entry into pop culture was as a cast member on teen drama Degrassi in the early ‘00s. It wasn’t long before he began to pursue a career in music, and it was his 2009 mixtape So Far Gone that first earned him serious attention. Lil Wayne, already a multi-time collaborator with Drake at that point, signed him to Young Money Entertainment just months after its release.

Drake’s 2010 debut studio album, Thank Me Later, topped the US charts and went Platinum, as did each of his next three albums. But an artist as multifaceted as Drake doesn’t limit himself to mere albums—mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late hit No. 1 in 2015, and “playlist” More Life did the same in 2017. While he’s released dozens of buzzy singles throughout the last decade, “One Dance” may take the cake for ubiquity: it was at one point Spotify’s most-streamed song of all time.

In 2018, Drake has continued to pump out hits with the single "God's Plan", which was accompanied by a touching music video that has racked up more than 500 million views, as well as the chart-topping "Nice for What." To his fans' delight, the rapper announced on May 14 that he would be embarking on a massive North American tour with fellow hip-hop superstars Migos, titled "Aubrey & The Three Amigos.” The tour kicks off on July 26 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
