Duke Blue Devils Basketball Details
Coach Mike Krzyzewski — “Coach K” to most — returns for the 2017-18 NCAA basketball season after a wild, up-and-down year that saw the Duke Blue Devils make a disappointing second round exit in the NCAA Tournament against South Carolina. The Blue Devils went into the tournament as a #2 seed, despite on-court issues with star guard Grayson Allen and off-court health issues that kept Coach Kyzyzewski from being on the bench for seven games. These issues led to a disappointing 5th place finish in the ACC, the team’s second straight 5th-place finish.
The Blue Devils had a normal Duke year on paper but 2016-17 was filled with both excitement and uncertainty. This season, Duke’s Grayson Allen returns for his senior season after a junior year that saw him suspended and benched for tripping and attitude issues. Allen averaged just 14.5 points per game, more than seven down from 15-16 where he averaged 21.6. Look for a bounce-back year for him, as his NBA Draft position will depend on it. While Allen returns, the Blue Devils lost freshmen Jayson Tatum Harry Giles and Frank Jackson, sophomore Luke Kennard, and senior leader Amile Jefferson. Incoming freshman guard Trevon Duval should make the most immediate impact on this Duke team, taking up the floor general role. He’ll have help from fellow freshman Gary Trent Jr., a 6’5” guard who can score at will along with a lot of inside help from Wendell Carter, who should be the Blue Devils’ primary post option. The fans of Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham will be looking for a better year in conference and the team has a lot of options to help make that happen.
