The Oilers of the 1980s are one of the NHL’s most famous playoff dynasties. Wayne Gretzky and Oilers first reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1983, but the Oilers were swept in the final round by another 1980s NHL dynasty: the New York Islanders. The Islanders’ victory over Edmonton in the Stanley Cup Final was their 4th consecutive Stanley Cup title.
Inspired by the Islanders’ gritty example, the Oilers returned to the Stanley Cup Final the following season and got their rematch with New York. The turning point of the series came in Game 3. With the series tied and the Oilers down 2-1, Mark Messier scored a goal on an incredible solo effort, and the Oilers went on to win the game 7-2. Edmonton did not lose again for the rest of the series, and the Oilers won their first Stanley Cup at home after Game 5. Though Gretzky finished at the top of playoff scoring race with an impressive 35 points, Messier was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP.
Gretzky and the Oilers won the Stanley Cup 3 more times during the 80s. During their 1985 playoff run, which ended with the Oilers defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Final, Gretzky set a record by recording 47 points in the Oilers’ 18 game playoff run.
In 1988, during the celebration of his last Stanley Cup with the Oilers, Gretzky gathered the team on the ice for a picture with the Stanley Cup. The Oilers were the first team to pose for an on-ice photo with the Cup. Since then, every Cup-winning team has taken a similar photo.
In 2006, the Oilers made a Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Final. They became the first 8th seed to reach the Final, and they came within a game of winning the Stanley Cup.
New captain Connor McDavid brought the Oilers back to the playoffs in 2017 after they had missed the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons. The Oilers lost to the Ducks in the second round, ending McDavid’s first playoff run.
NHL Playoff Format
The NHL is split into an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference. A total of 16 teams make the playoffs, and after three rounds, the two remaining teams from each conference face off in the Stanley Cup Final.
