2018 Big East Basketball Tournament
Played since 1980, the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament hasn’t gone through many changes in those 30-plus years. In fact, since 1983, the tournament has been held in the same location: New York City’s Madison Square Garden. It’s only appropriate that the team tied for the most Big East tourney titles was the team that won the inaugural one. The Georgetown Hoyas fought off Syracuse in the 1980 tourney and have won six more since, tying them with the UCONN Huskies at seven titles a piece. Since then, UCONN has moved on to the AAC and Georgetown has gone through some struggles. Neither team was a factor in this past season’s tournament.
The 2017 Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament was a fun affair, one that saw Jay Wright’s Villanova Wildcats win their third conference title, with guard Josh Hart taking home the MVP honors. The Wildcats knocked off Creighton in the championship game, beating the Blue Jays 74-60. Last season, the Big East Tournament celebrated its 35th year at New York’s Madison Square Garden, making it the longest-running postseason basketball conference tournament held at the same venue.
History will repeat itself as the Big East Tournament will again be held in Madison Square Garden from March 7-March 10, 2018. The Villanova Wildcats will certainly be viewed as the favorites for another title, but don’t count out the scrappy teams like the Butler Bulldogs and the 2017 runner-up Creighton Blue Jays. The Big East Tournament has turned into a very fun conference tourney to watch and the 2018 season could end up being the most exciting one yet.
