2018 Big East Basketball Tournament
The Big East exploded onto the scene in the 1980s, with Georgetown, Villanova, Syracuse, St. John’s, Providence and Seton Hall combining for eight Final Four appearances and a couple of national titles.
Now, it's a 10-team conference, including the “Catholic Seven” – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova – along with Butler, Creighton and Xavier.
The Big East Tournament was originally held in 1980 at the Providence Civic Center. It has been contested at Madison Square Garden annually since 1983, and will stay in its marquee location through at least 2025. Among the current conference members, Georgetown has won the event the most.
The Hoyas’ most memorable Big East victory came in an overtime matchup with Syracuse in the 1984 tournament final. Future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led the way with 27 points and 16 rebounds, clinching the first of his two Big East tourney MVP awards.
The event is held over four days, with a Wednesday doubleheader, four games on Thursday, the semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday. As always, the winner gets an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
