2019 Big Ten Basketball Tournament
The Big Ten has been around since the 1800s, but it was the last conference to add a postseason basketball tournament. It was worth the wait.
All but a small number of the tournaments have been held at Chicago’s United Center and Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The two sites will alternate as hosts through 2022.
The five-day college basketball extravaganza includes all 14 of the Big Ten’s teams. The 11 through 14 seeds play in a Wednesday doubleheader, followed by four games each on Thursday and Friday.
The semifinal doubleheader is held on Saturday with the championship game on Sunday. This schedule usually makes the Big Ten champ the final team to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament (though the event was held a week earlier than usual in 2018).
The tournament’s best final may have been the overtime affair between Wisconsin and Michigan State in 2015. The game was tied at 69 at the end of regulation time, but the Badgers clamped down on defense to shut out the Spartans in the overtime period, and won 80-69. Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky was named as tournament MVP, and Wisconsin went on to reach the NCAA final, where it lost to Duke.
In 2000, the Michigan State Spartans went on to win the national championship after taking their second straight Big Ten title.
