2018 Big Ten Basketball Tournament
One of the nation’s newest conference tournaments, the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament has only been played since 1998. In its inaugural season, the Michigan Wolverines took home the title but that win has since been vacated due to a scandal that was later revealed. In-state rivals Michigan State lead all teams with five total titles, including two straight following the ’98 vacated title, but the 2017 tournament allowed the Wolverines to make up for the past discretions.
The 2017 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament was one of the most exciting in years. In fact, the tournament champion ended up being a team that almost didn’t compete. The Michigan Wolverines were involved in an incident involving a plane that skidded off a runway and crashed nearby. Everyone was safe and the Wolverines were able to board another plane and make it in time for their first tournament game, despite having to wear their practice jerseys for it. Ultimately, the Wolverines banned together and went on an inspired run, culminating in a 71-56 championship game win over the Wisconsin Badgers.
The 2018 Big Ten Tournament should be a fun affair as well. For the first time, the tourney will be held in New York’s Madison Square Garden from February 28-March 4, 2018, where it will be played a week earlier than usual because of the already-scheduled Big East Tournament taking place in the same venue. With teams like Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan coming off inspired finishes to last season, the 2018 tournament should be one to watch, even if it is a week earlier than usual.
