The History of Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil has transformed immensely since its conception in 1984. Cirque du Soleil was established in Montreal and started as a troupe of 20 street performers trained in acrobatics and other circus arts. The original Cirque du Soleil group, formed in the eighties, called themselves Les Echassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (the Baie-Saint-Paul Stiltwalkers). This troupe comprised not only stilted performers, but fire-breathers, tight-ropers, dancers, jugglers, and other types of performers. As Cirque du Soleil expanded out of Quebec and into other neighboring provinces, the troupe realized they were onto something.

The performers impressed the right people during their Los Angeles debut in 1987 to afford a North American tour the following year. Through the nineties, Cirque becomes a household name and various show themes were launched throughout the decade. Following ongoing acclaim in the new Millennium, the Cirque team experienced their first IMAX feature (2002), their first Guinness World Record (2004), and countless other milestones. In the last decade, these milestones have turned into expansion with Cirque teams creating subsidiary content machines, continuing to add new cities and venues to their docket.
