NCAA Tournament 2018: Boise
Boise, Idaho is one of the first and second round locations for the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Boise State will host at Taco Bell Arena on March 15 and 17. It will mark the tournament’s ninth time at Taco Bell Arena, which is located on Boise State University’s campus and the home of the Broncos. The surrounding area offers plenty of outdoor activities for fans to unwind, such as hiking, fishing, and river rafting. Fans can look forward to the tournament returning to Boise in 2021, along with the four other confirmed cities of Dallas, Detroit, Wichita, and Omaha.
NCAA Tournament Boise History
Boise State and Taco Bell Arena are no strangers to the tournament’s first and second rounds, as they have already hosted them eight times in 1983, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005, and 2009. In 2001, there was a day in the Boise rounds with four games decided by a total of only seven points, including fifteenth-seeded Hampton’s major upset over second-seeded Iowa State. The 1995 Boise rounds included that year’s Championship team, UCLA, and team member, Tyus Edney’s iconic layup right before the buzzer to defeat Missouri. In the 1992 Boise rounds, Shaquille O’Neal played his last ever collegiate game with LSU, beaten by Indiana and their renowned coach, Bob Knight.
This year, Boise is making upgrades, such as a brand new 116-foot-long basketball court that is four feet longer than the arena’s current court and will arrive on March 10. The court’s extended length is for photo boxes for additional photographers. In 2009, the media was mostly on the sidelines, while this year’s new setup will move them to behind the baskets. The change was mainly made so that holders of the NCAA’s new VIP fan experience packages can enjoy closer views of the court.
