MLB All-Star Weekend
MLB All-Star Weekend is one of the most exciting times of the summer for baseball fans, as they get a chance to see their favorite players compete in both the T-Mobile Home Run Derby and MLB All-Star Game presented by MasterCard. This is a very exclusive time of the year, as only eight players compete in the Home Run Derby and 34 players are selected to each All-Star team. The teams you’ll see squaring off in the game on Tuesday are the American League All-Stars and National League All-Stars. And not only will a Home Run Derby winner be crowned, but we’ll also see somebody take home the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award. The Home Run Derby and All-Star Game are not the only events of the weekend, though. There is plenty other must-see action, including the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game.
How does the Home Run Derby work?
The Home Run Derby consists of an eight-man bracket, and the players are seeded in order of how many homers they’ve hit during the regular season. Each matchup then consists of each player trying to hit as many dingers as he can in a four-minute span. Whoever hits more is the winner of that round. The clock does occasionally stop, as the timer will pause when a player hits a home run and will then start again when the player takes his next swing. There are also bonuses a player can earn for hitting a ball a certain distance. If a player hits two homers that go at least 440 feet, they get an extra 30 seconds of time. Each player also gets one 45-second timeout—in the final round, they each get two. If there is a tie in any matchup then the batters will enter a 60-second swing-off. If that doesn’t decide a winner then the competitors will perform three-swing swing-offs until somebody emerges victorious.
Home Run Derby Record Book
Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton won the 2016 Home Run Derby. Stanton was an absolute monster a year ago, hitting a total of 61 homers throughout the competition. No player in Derby history had ever hit that amount. The White Sox’s Todd Frazier, however, has the most all-time home runs in this competition. He is the guy that came away with the win two years ago, when he won at Great American Ball Park as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. Yoenis Cespedes is one active player that also needs to be mentioned here. Cespedes is the only active player to have won this event more than once, but he is not the all-time leader in Home Run Derby victories. That would be Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., who won in 1994, 1998 and 1999.
Which league has had more success in the MLB All-Star Game?
The All-Star Game has been a back-and-forth affair from year to year throughout its history, which only adds to the excitement of this event. The National League has had a slight edge in victories, as they have won 43 times and the American League has only 42 victories. It has, however, been the American League that has dominated this game recently. After winning the 2016 All-Star Game 4-2, the AL has now won four straight against the National League. The American League is also 16-3-1 in the past 20 installments of this game.
Who won the All-Star Game MVP Award in 2016?
The winner of the All-Star Game MVP in 2016 was Eric Hosmer. Hosmer plays first base for the Kansas City Royals, and he was appearing in his first career All-Star Game in that one. The slugger finished the game 2-for-3 with a single, a homer and two RBIs in a 4-2 win for the American League. He also helped snap a two-year streak of Angels outfielder Mike Trout winning the award.
