MLS Cup Details
The MLS Cup is the trophy awarded to the winner of the MLS Cup final, which itself is the concluding match of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top professional league in the United States is unlike many international leagues, which crown a champion based solely on the results of the regular season. The format of the MLS, however, fits more neatly within the American system of sports in which playoffs determine the ultimate champion.
With such a playoff system existing, fans can take advantage of exciting matches throughout the post-season, none more exhilarating than the MLS Cup final itself. The MLS Cup final is a one-match affair, akin to the NFL’s Super Bowl. Unlike its more famous counterpart, the MLS Cup final is contested at the home stadium of the team with the higher point total during the regular season, as opposed to at a neutral, predetermined venue.
MLS Cup History
The first MLS Cup was awarded in 1996 and was won by D.C. United. The team from the nation’s capital won three of the first four MLS Cups, and added another to its trophy cabinet in 2004. The Los Angeles Galaxy is the team that has the most MLS Cups to its name with five total, the first coming in 2002 and the most recent in 2014. The Galaxy has been quite dominant in the Western Conference, having been its representative in the MLS Cup a total of nine times. The other teams with multiple MLS Cups are the Houston Dynamo, Sporting Kansas City, and the San Jose Earthquakes all of which have held the trophy twice. The rest of the champions have been the Chicago Fire, ;Columbus Crew, Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids, Portland Timbers and the 2016 MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders FC. Overall, the Western Conference has proven to be the dominant force in the MLS, having won 15 of the 21 MLS Cups in league history, with the Eastern Conference well behind at just six.
The MLS Cup final is usually a hotly contested match, and none of the previous 21 editions has ended in a margin of victory of greater than two goals,—and a two-goal victory has only happened five times. Another six have been decided by just one goal in regulation, with a further ten requiring extra time. Of the extra time matches, seven were decided by penalty shootout, including the 2016 MLS Cup final. Given its tense and dramatic history, the MLS Cup final is an absolute can’t-miss event.
