Florida Gators Basketball Details

The University of Florida is well-known for its football program, with national titles and multiple Heisman Trophy winners having called The Swamp their home. But the Gators’ basketball team has become a big name in its own right, earning a couple of NCAA championships and a handful of Final Four appearances over the last few decades.

The Gators began playing basketball in 1915, and were a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. The program gained national prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, but the 2000s were when things really took off.

Billy Donovan was hired as Florida’s head coach in 1996, and led his squad to an NCAA runner-up finish in just his fourth season. Donovan’s teams won back-to-back NCAA championships in 2006 and 2007, and his 2013-14 group was the first in SEC history to post an 18-0 conference record in the regular season.

The national championship squads included future NBA stars Corey Brewer, Al Horford and Joakim Noah.

Speaking of the SEC, Florida doesn’t have any in-state conference rivals, but Gator fans have developed a healthy disdain for national power Kentucky. Florida also battles Florida State every year in a battle for Sunshine State supremacy that originated in 1951.

The Gators play home games at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, which is on campus and holds just over 10,000 fans. Dubbed the “O’Dome” by Florida students, the venue features a raucous student section known as the “Rowdy Reptiles.”
