The Panthers made their first big playoff run in 1996, just three years after they entered the league as an expansion team. The season got off to an unusual start when Scott Mellanby, who led the Panthers in points that year, used his hockey stick to kill a rat in the Panthers’ locker room. Mellanby scored two goals in the game, and one of his teammates called Mellanby’s performance a "rat trick."
The “rat trick” inspired a unique tradition in Florida. Panthers fans began throwing plastic rats onto the ice in order to celebrate a Panthers goal. One of the most famous images of the 1996 Stanley Cup Playoffs is of Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy standing in his crease as the rats rain down on him.
The ‘96 Panthers played a tight-checking style and were difficult to play against. The Panthers defeated the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference on their way to their first Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers mostly stayed true to their style: they gave up 8 goals in Game 2 but took Game 4 to triple overtime at a 0-0 tie. Colorado’s Uwe Krupp finally scored in the 3rd overtime of Game 4 to win the Cup for the Avs.
After a 10 season playoff drought, the Panthers won the Southeast Division and finally qualified for the postseason in again in 2012 but lost in the first round. In 2016, the Panthers won their division—the Atlantic Division this time—but were defeated again in round one.
NHL Playoff Format?
There are 16 teams and four total rounds in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The winner of each round is decided by a best-of-seven-games series. Round 3 is the Conference Final and then the winners of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference Finals face each other in the Stanley Cup Final.
