Georgia Bulldogs Football Details
The University of Georgia had a new football coach for the first time in 15 years in 2016, and new head honcho Kirby Smart showed instilled faith in the fanbase that he can take this program to the top of the SEC. With five-star freshman quarterback Jacob Eason running the offense, Smart led the Dawgs to an 8-5 record, including wins over ranked opponents North Carolina and Auburn, plus a 31-23 victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl. The Bulldogs figure to be one of the SEC’s most improved teams in 2017, as Eason is back under center with a full year of experience under his belt. He’s not the only one coming back: running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, who combined for over 2,000 rushing yards in 2016, return to join Eason in the backfield. The defense, too, is stacked with veteran talent, including stud senior linebackers Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy.
With claims to five national titles, 12 Southeastern Conference championships, 52 bowl appearances and two Heisman Trophy winners—Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker—the Georgia Bulldogs boast one of the most storied college football programs in the nation. Georgia plays on campus in the NCAA’s tenth-largest stadium, Sanford Stadium, and is represented by mascot Uga, a living, white bulldog. A founding member of the SEC since 1932, Georgia enjoys rivalries with a series of southern schools, but none more famously than their feud with the University of Florida. The annual meeting between the two football teams has earned the nickname of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
