Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Basketball Details
Though the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets basketball program began in 1906, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the school began to really make a name for itself under coach Bobby Cremins. During the Cremins era, the Jackets earned their first Final Four berth in 1990, a feat they wouldn’t repeat until the 2004 season, when the team lost to UConn in the National Championship. New coach Josh Pastner, who was hired in 2011, will try to bring the team back to March Madness for the first time since 2010. Pastner was the previous head coach of University of Memphis from 2009-2106, and is off to a good start with Georgia Tech, being named ACC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year in his first season with the team.
The 2016-2017 season brought exciting home wins against Florida State and Notre Dame. The Yellow Jackets were also seeded number six in the NIT and made it all the way through the tournament, defeating Indiana and Ole Miss before losing to TCU in the Championship Game. The future is bright for Georgia Tech, which boasts a great freshman class with four new recruits and one transfer player joining the team for the 2017-2018 season. First, transfer and graduate student Brandon Alston from Lehigh University will be joining the team with two years of eligibility. He averaged 5.8 points at Lehigh and should add depth to the rotation. Freshman Mose Wright, a late bloomer to basketball who has only played since high school, committed to Georgia Tech in April. He averaged 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in his senior year. Point guard Jose Alvarado, shooting guard Curtis Haywood II and power forward Evan Cole will also be on the team this upcoming season, and each will have a chance to make an immediate impact.
