Virtual band scores big with real audience (Created February 6, 2013)
They can claim the distinction as the first ever "virtual hip-hop," though Gorillaz actually combines the musical talents of various real musicians giving sound to a quartet of animated members.
That's right. We said animated. As in… cartoon characters. AKA -- a "virtual band."
But the musical and visual project created in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett was gangbusters in the early going. The 2001 eponymous debut album sold seven million copies and landed them in the Guinness Book of World Records as the 'Most Successful Virtual Band.' Certainly not a bad start for the creative team behind 2D (lead vocalist, keyboard), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar and drum machine), Noodle (guitar, keyboard, vocals) and Russel Hobbs (drums and percussion).
The music of Gorillaz spans a number of genres, including alternative, electronica, dub, hip hop, rock and pop. The diversity was certainly evident with the band's second album. Danger Mouse (the DJ behind the mash-up of the Beatles' White Album and Jay-Z's Black Album) took the reigns of the project, which included Dennis Hopper, Shaun Ryder, De La Soul and others. "Demon Days" arrived in the spring of 2005 and debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, went double platinum in the United States and received a host of Grammy nominations.
The most recent Gorillaz project, which took three years to finish, bowed in March 2010. It featured guest appearances by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and Hypnotic Bass Ensemble. Gorillaz also received attention for its supporting tour, which featured ex-Clash members Paul Simonon and Mick Jones.
