Written by acclaimed singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, the musical was conceived as a folk opera. Mitchell teamed with innovative director, Rachel Chavkin, to transition the work into a full stage musical. Hadestown premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, where it was extended due to popular demand.
