Houston Astros

The Astros joined the National League as an expansion team in 1962. They were originally known as the Colt .45s, but the team changed its name to the Astros when they moved to the famous Astrodome in 1965. The Astros played at the Astrodome until the end of the 1999 season.

The Astros were one of the best sports stories of 2017. The Houston area was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey. In addition to the harm to the city and its residents, damage and flooding from the storm made it impossible for the Astros to play at Minute Maid Park. They played a “home” series against the Texas Rangers, their interstate rivals, at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay. All the while, though, the Astros were one of the best teams in baseball. They scored more runs than any other major league team, and second baseman Jose Altuve — who hit for an incredible .346 batting average — was the American League MVP. And at the trade deadline, the Astros bolstered an already talented pitching rotation by acquiring Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers.

The Astros won the AL West division and faced the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS. After defeating the Sox in four games, they advanced to the ALCS, where they played the New York Yankees. Justin Verlander dominated for the Astros: he had 21 strikeouts over two starts and pitched a complete game in Game 2. The Astros ultimately beat the Yankees in seven games. In the World Series, the Astros faced the Dodgers. It took another seven game series, but Houston ultimately prevailed and won its first ever World Series title. It was also the first World Series victory for the state of Texas.
