Wisconsin Badgers Football Details
While no one disputed that the University of Wisconsin had a talented football team entering the 2016 season, few in the college football media seemed to think that the Badgers would be able to overcome the country’s toughest schedule—which ended up including six top-ten opponents—to make an impact on the national landscape. Well, impact it they did, as they went 11-3 en route to an appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game, a victory in the Cotton Bowl and a final ranking of No. 9 in the country. Three members of that team were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, including first-round pick T.J. Watt. Now, as head coach Paul Chryst enters his third season in Madison, the team has their eyes on a goal that narrowly eluded them last season: a Big Ten title. Young quarterback Alex Hornibrook has a year of experience under his belt, and he’ll once again be backed by perhaps the toughest defense in a notoriously tough defensive conference. Linebacker T.J. Edwards, cornerback Derrick Tindal and safety D’Cota Nixon are just a few key players on that side of the ball.
The Badgers have won 14 conference titles in program history, with the first coming in 1896 and the most recent coming in 2012. Madison has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners: Alan Ameche in 1954 and Ron Dayne in 1999. Wisconsin plays its home games at one of the most storied venues in all of college sports, Camp Randall Stadium. Camp Randall has been home of the Badgers since 1895. Since 1998, students have joyously hopped up and down to House of Pain’s “Jump Around” during the intermission between the third and fourth quarters of football games.
