John Reilly and Friends plan album release
John C. Reilly has been plenty busy this year promoting his weird and wonderful show on Adult Swim, "Check It out with Steve Brule." But in his spare time he continues to perform with the John Reilly and Friends band.
Worry not, Reilly fans. He has no plans to completely ditch acting in favor of music. In fact, he laughed it off in a recent interview and said, "It wasn't like we were, 'We're going to start a band. We're going to do this many shows. We're going to make a record. We're going to get organized.' It was just like, 'We're gonna go do that thing we do in the garage, so let's go do it.'"
In the summer of 2013 Reilly announced plans to release his debut studio album and said he hoped to record roots-folk and Americana cover versions on Jack White's Third Man Records label. He called the project a "labor of love" and noted that it was music he was simply interested in playing with friends, and not something he was doing just to make money.
Reilly (and his friends) played a series of dates in early 2014 at places like the Bootleg Theatre (Los Angeles), Aladdin Theatre (Portland, Oregon) and the Rio Theatre (Vancouver, BC). They also played June 21 at the Codfish Hollow Barn in Maquoketa, Iowa.
John C. Reilly is a jack of all trades (Created June 5, 2013)
John C. Reilly is one of those guys. Actor, comedian, producer, singer, writer and all-around entertainment virtuoso. It's that moment when the talent shifts in one direction that a whole new fan base can be captured.
What hasn't Reilly accomplished? To check off the list, he has appeared in more than 50 films, including three separate films in 2002 that were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He's also been nominated for a Grammy Award for the song "Walk Hard," which he performed in "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story."
It's on that note that we move on to Reilly's suddenly robust music career. His group, John Reilly & Friends, has released two singles on Third Man Records. And not only does he have some famous faces along for the ride, including Jack White, the second track features Reilly covering Ray Price and Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner tracks with Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark. And (oh, yeah) joining in are guitarist and singer/songwriter Dan Bern, bassist Sebastian Steinberg and singer/guitarist/banjoist Willie Watson.
The shows put on by John Reilly & Friends are unique, in that the musicians all take turns stepping up to one main mic, or playing in the round to harmonize and bring their songs to life. In 2012, they were slated to perform in the Railroad Revival Tour, alongside Willie Nelson & Family, Band of Horses and Jamey Johnson. However, the event was canceled. Since then, the group has played limited engagements – including the Sasquatch Festival in George, Washington on May 28, 2013.
