Kansas City Royals Details

The Royals joined the American League as an expansion team in 1969. It didn’t take long for Kansas City to compete with the best MLB teams: they reached the playoffs in seven seasons between 1976 and 1985 – including six American League West titles – and won the World Series for the first time in 1985. But this first World Series also marked the beginning of a long playoff drought.

The Royals joined the AL Central division when the American League realigned in 1994. They did not reach the postseason again until the 2014 season. The 28 years that passed between playoff appearances is the second longest in the Wild Card era.

It was a long time to wait, but the Royals rewarded their fans for sticking with them. After qualifying for the playoffs in 2014, the Royals won their first 8 playoff games — they were the first MLB team to do so — and won the AL Pennant. They lost the World Series to the Giants in seven games but rebounded in the next season. The 2015 Royals won the AL Central for the first time and returned to the World Series, where they faced the New York Mets. The Royals defeated the Mets in five games, including a dramatic 14-inning Game 1 victory (the game tied for the longest game by innings in World Series history and lasted over five hours). Alex Gordon tied the game with a solo, two-out home run in the 9th inning, and the Royals won the game off a sacrifice fly in the 14th inning. Catcher Salvador Perez was the World Series MVP.

Royals fandom extends far beyond the Missouri borders

As the most top team in 257 total counties, the Royals are one of the most popular teams in the country according to an analysis of SeatGeek data published at the start of the 2019 MLB season. Only the Braves (515), Rangers (287), and Cardinals (286) are the number one team in more counties.

The Royals also rank second for most out-of-state counties, with 223 of those 257 counties located in states that are not Missouri. The Braves (360) again take the top spot in this category.

Additional findings in our data include:

  • The Braves, with strong support across the southeastern U.S., are the most popular team in 515 counties -- most in the MLB
  • The Mariners, who control Alaska and much of the Pacific Northwest, are the team that covers the greatest land area
  • The Braves are also in control of the most “out of state counties” with 360, followed by the Royals (223) and Cardinals (205)
  • Baseball allegiance in Pennsylvania is split among seven teams, more than any other state
