St. Louis is known as the Gateway to the West and for its major contributions to American music in genres like blues, jazz, and ragtime. The city has produced stars like Chuck Berry, Bennie Smith, and Sheryl Crow. The Fabulous Fox Theatre is a St. Louis landmark and a popular venue for concerts by nationally touring artists. The Fox started out as a movie palace when it opened in 1929. The theater closed briefly in the late 1970s and was completely restored before it reopened as a live performance venue in 1982. The Fox hosted a 60th birthday celebration and tribute for local legend Chuck Berry in 1986, and has also hosted artists including Ringo Starr, Beck, and Kansas in addition to Broadway shows and famous stand-up comedians and speakers.

Delmar Hall and The Pageant are two more staples in the local concert scene, and also happen to be located right next to each other. Of the two, Delmar is the newer and more intimate venue: its capacity ranges from 350 to 750 people depending on the event. It opened in 2016, with local rock group Stir performing the first concert. The Pageant has a similar feel in a larger space: its capacity goes up to 2300, and the venue has been named one of the top clubs in the world in terms of total ticket sales. It opened in 2000, with a concert from — you guessed it — Chuck Berry.

Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre is the area’s major outdoor concert venue. It can fit a total of 20,000 people in both covered-seating and lawn areas. In addition to artists like REO Speedwagon, Styx, Kings of Leon, and Sting, the amphitheater has also hosted music festivals like Vans Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, and Ozzfest.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra plays at Powell Symphony Hall. The St. Louis Orchestra is internationally renowned: the group has won numerous Grammy awards and has dozens of nominations. Powell Hall originally opened in 1925 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The symphony plays traditional classical music and also appeals to a wider audience with shows where they perform music from popular films such as Harry Potter and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

St. Louis’s pro-sports venues also double as some of its largest concert venues. Enterprise Center (formerly Scottrade Center) is the home of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues. The venue hosts approximately 175 events each year and can accommodate up to 20,000 fans for performances by artists like Bon Jovi, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, and more.

St. Louis Concert Venues

The Fox Theatre is one of the city’s best venues, and is located in Grand Center, a few blocks north of St. Louis University’s campus. Powell Hall, home to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, is just a little further up the street.

Delmar Hall and The Pageant are two more STL hot spots, located next to each other in the Delmar Loop in University City. Both are close to the north campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, an outdoor venue, is located in nearby Maryland Heights. It’s about a 25 minute drive west from St. Louis.

Enterprise Center is in the Downtown West neighborhood, on Clark Avenue, and hosts many of the city’s major visiting acts as the primary arena in town.
